The Paralympics In My Backyard
The Paralympics In My Backyard
The 2010 Olympic winter games came to a close a few weeks ago, and just when we thought we’d have to go back to the boring drudgery of our day to day lives, the Paralympics are in town to re-ignite some Canadian patriotism and show the world that we can host yet another world class event in one of the most beautiful cities on earth!
It’s not as high profile an event, but the spirit is still alive here in Vancouver for the 2010 Vancouver Paralympic games. I will say this though, the Paralympics don’t draw NEARLY the crowd size that it’s sister event drew. This is VERY low key by comparison.
With that being said, it’s easy to take advantage of the smaller crowds and partake in some of the Olympic excitement without tripping over thousands of people.
During the Olympics we waited in line to see the Medals at the mint. It was an exhausting/exhilarating 9 hour wait to get to touch a piece of the Olympics.

The Olympic and Paralympic Cauldron
or as I like to call it...
“The Cauldron of Solitude”
Our initial plan was that we would spend a few hours waiting in line for the mint, see the medals and then go line up for the Cauldron as well. Yeah, there were hundreds, if not thousands of people at the Cauldron waiting for a glimpse and a photo op, so we stood about 300 ft away and took photos in the dark from across the street. BOOO!
Luckily, it occurred to me that they would likely re-light the Cauldron for the Paralympics and the crowds would be considerably diminished. I was right, and I snapped a few GREAT photos and even a video!
